Emporia, Kansas- The Metropolitan State University of Denver's baseball team fell to Emporia State 22-6 on Friday, February 10. The Roadrunners are now 2-3 overall. The Hornets improved to 3-1.
Junior Donny Ortiz jr., got the Roadrunners going right from the start hitting a lead off solo homer in the top of the first giving the team a spark early on. The Roadrunners also kept the Hornet bats scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, with Senior
Derek Stimpson (Colorado Springs/Doherty H.S.) getting the start on the mound.
The Hornets answered back with with four runs off three hits with one going out of the park to score two. Emporia continued the momentum through most of the game with the Roadrunners only holding the Hornets scoreless in the 8
th inning.
The Hornets scored five runs in the third, three runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth, and five runs in the seventh.
The Roadrunners big inning came in the fifth when senior
Jake Thurston (Centennial, Colo./Grandview H.S.) homered to left center to make the score 4-12 in favor of the Hornets.
MSU Denver would go on to score one run in the eighth off Freshman
Dylan Nelson (Lakewood, Colo./D'Evelyn Jr/Sr High School)'s single. O'Donnels single down the middle in the ninth would send Ortiz home to score the final run for the Roadrunners on the day with the score of 22-6.
The Roadrunner will take on the Hornets tomorrow at 12 noon.
