Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated Regis University 67-61 on Saturday, February 11. The Roadrunners advance to 16-10 overall and 12-7 RMAC. The Rangers fall to 17-6 overall and 12-6 in the RMAC.
Junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) led the Roadrunners in scoring with 24 points. She was followed by senior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) and sophomore
Mikayla Gonzales (Castle Rock, Colo./Castle View High School) with 10 points each. The Roadrunners out shot the Ranger with 48.9 percent to their 31.1 percent from the field.
Regis kicked off the night scoring two from downtown on its first two possessions. However, Squires-Horton answer back scoring one from inside the paint and one from beyond to arch to make the the score 6-5 in favor of the Rangers.
Two free-throws from
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) put the Roadrunners up 9-8 with 4:51 to go in the quarter. MSU Denver was able to keep the lead until one minute remaining when Chante Church hit a three to put the Rangers up 16-15, but the Roadrunners answered back with sophomore
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) finishing a layup with two seconds remaining in the quarter to send the game into the second quarter with the Roadrunners up 17-16. MSU Denver shot 60 percent from the field in the first quarter and held the Rangers to 25 percent.
The second quarter remained close between the two sides with Regis holding the largest lead at eight points.
The Roadrunners answered back with a 9-2 run to go up 33-31 with 1:44 to go in the half. A Ranger three with 44 seconds left would put them up 34-33 going into half. Squires-Horton led the Roadrunners with 18 first half points, with 11 coming in the first quarter.
MSU Denver scored the first four points of the half, but Regis answered back going on a 7-0 run taking a four-point lead. The Roadrunners continued to respond, scoring the next six to take a two points lead with 2:38 to go in the third quarter.
The rest of the quarter remained close with the Rangers sinking a three with with six seconds left in the quarter to put them up 48-46 going into the final quarter.
MSU Denver went on a 8-3 run to begin the fourth quarter to regain the lead 54-51. Ohrdorf scored seven of the eight points giving the Roadrunners the edge to start the quarter.
The energy carried over with the Roadrunners taking a 7 point led at 62-55 with 1:15 to go in the game. The Rangers were able to cut the led by five with 19 seconds remaining but despite the Rangers efforts the Roadrunners pull through out scoring the Rangers 21-13 in the quarter to gain the victory.
The Roadrunners will be back in action February 18th at the Auraira Events Center where they will face UCCS at 5 p.m.
