Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated UCCS 82-66 on Saturday, February 18. The Roadrunners improved to 17-10 overall and 13-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions fell to 18-8 overall and 15-5 in conference play.
The Roadrunners were led by junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) who finished with 26 points and nine rebounds. Junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) finished the night with 17 points. Sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) added 15 points for the Roadrunners with seven rebounds and nine assists. The Roadrunners shots 48 percent from the field and 55 percent from the three. They held the Mountain Lions to 37 percent from the field and 35 from behind the arch.
The Roadrunners came out on fire in the first out scoring the Mountain Lions 21-9 in the first quarter. MSU Denver went on a 19-2 run for the duration of six minutes to finish the quarter. MSU Denver shot 46 percent in the first quarter while holding the Mountain Lions to 25 percent.
MSU Denver never lost its lead in the second quarter but UCCS put the defensive pressure on the Roadrunners in the second quarter out-scoring them 21-13. The Mountain lions went on a 10-2 run in the second quarter to cut the score to five with 2:43 to go in the half. Ohrdorf converted a three-point play right after to extend the Roadrunner lead back to eight.
The Mountain Lions would continue to fight bringing the game within four to end the half at 30-34. Squires-Horton led all scorers at half with 10 points. Ohrdorf ended the first half with nine points and seven rebounds. The Roadrunners shot 38 percent in the first half while the Mountain Lions shot 35 percent.
Despite a close first start of the third quarter, the Roadrunners were able to make a break through in the third quarter.
The Mountain Lions cut the lead to one at 36-35 with just under eight minutes to go in the third quarter. A three pointer from Sophomore
Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) and a three-point play from Smith extended the Roadrunners lead to eight and kept the momentum in the Roadrunners favor.
MSU Denver would go on a 11-2 run to end the quarter and send the game into the fourth on top 63-48.
The Roadrunners dominated the fourth quarter as well, leading by as many as 18 and gaining the win 82-66.
The Roadrunners will travel to Lakewood to take on Colorado Christian Friday February 24 at 5 p.m.
