San Antonio, Texas- The Metropolitan State University of Denver's softball team competed in day one of the Rattler Invitational. In game one of the day the Roadrunners defeated No. 12 Central Oklahoma. In game two the Roadrunners fell to host, No.10 St. Mary's 3-2. The Roadrunners are now 4-6 overall.
In the first game of the day, Junior Haley Fields started at pitcher for the Roadrunners and held the Bronchos to a scoreless first inning. The Roadrunners were first to make it on the score board with hits from junior Haley Fields, senior Collissa Bakovich, and junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.). Anderson's run would send Fields home to put the Roadrunners up 1-0.
Both teams scored a run in the second inning with the Broncos scoring off of two hits. Fields hit a single to send senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) home for the Roadrunners and keep the lead for MSU Denver at 2-1.
The Bronchos caught fire in the top of the fourth inning scoring five runs off five hits, including a two run home run. Freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) would pick up at pitcher for the Roadrunners in the top of the fourth. Central Oklahoma kept the Roadrunners scoreless in the bottom of the fourth.
The Roadrunners would score the next three innings while keeping the Bronchos scoreless to keep the score within one. Two runs came in the fifth inning off a two run homerun from junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.), while single runs would come in the sixth and seventh for the Roadrunners.
Going into the bottom of the seventh the Roadrunners were down 5-4. Anderson hit a single to right field to send freshman
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) home for the tying run of the game and sending the game into extra innings.
With a scoreless eighth inning from both sides, the Roadrunners were able to pull off the win in the bottom of the ninth off a single to left field from senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) to send freshman Tess Hass home. The Roadrunners earned the big win 8-7.
Game two of the day was a close battle between MSU Denver and the host, St. Mary's. McGhee would start at the mound for the Roadrunners.
Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings with the Roadrunners making a break through in the top of the third. Bakovich, Fields both his singles to get on base while Espinoza hit a single to right center to bring Fields and Bakovich home and put the Roadrunners up 2-0 going in the bottom of the third.
The Rattlers were able to come back in the bottom of the third scoring two runs off of three hits to tie the game at two a piece. The score would remain 2-2 throughout nearly the rest of the game with the Roadrunners held to just one hit through the rest of the game.
St. Mary's were able to take the game 3-2 off a game winning single from Hannah Michael to drive in Kristal Salinas.
The Roadrunners will be back in action at the Rattler Invitational tomorrow against St. Edward's at 11:15 a.m.
