Greeley, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's tennis team defeated University of Southern Utah 4-3 to open its 2017 season on Saturday, February 18.
The Roadrunners swept the doubles matches with junior Josh Gratetz and sophomore
Joey Tscherne (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy H.S.) defeating Tordoff and Yeakerz 6-3. Sophomore
Keenan Kaltenbacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) and senior
Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) won their doubles match 6-1. Junior
Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) and Freshman
Alejandro Martinez-Morilla (Madrid, Spain/I.E. Valdecas) completed the sweep defeating Feigein and Alba 6-3.
In singles Graetz, Tscherne, and Stember won their single matches. Graetz defeated Tordoff 6-2,6-2. Tscherne won in two sets as well taking the first 6-1 and the second 6-0. Stember defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-2. Martinez-Morilla fell in a close 7-5, 7-6. Kaltenbacher fell in three sets 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Hayes fell in his single match 6-2, 6-1.
Head coach
Daniel Hangstefer was pleased with his team's performance opening up the 2017 season, "This is a great win over a Division I program. The guys are getting better each day. We started strong in doubles and set the tone going into singles."
The Roadrunners will compete next Friday, February 24 against Air Force Academy.
