San Antonio, Texas- The Metropolitan State University of Denver's softball team gained two wins in day two of the the Rattler Invitational on Saturday, February 18. The Roadrunners defeated St. Edward's 13-2 and No. 12 Central Oklahoma 6-5, improving their record to 6-6.
In the top of the first inning the Roadrunners made it on the board after senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled to center field sending junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) home putting, the Roadrunners up 1-0. Smith started on the mound for the Roadrunners and kept the Hilltoppers scoreless through the first four innings.
MSU Denver scored three runs in the top of the third. Smith singled to center field to send Espinoza home for the second time of the day. Smith would add another RBI off sac fly sending senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) home. Junior
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) would follow hitting a double to center field to score two more runs for the Roadrunners. MSU Denver led the game 5-0 going into the fifth inning.
The Hilltoppers broke their drought in the fifth and sixth inning scoring a run in each inning. However, the Roadrunners answered back scoring seven runs in the top of the seventh to seal the deal 13-2.
In the second game of the day freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started at pitcher for the Roadrunners and would pitch the entire game.
Both teams were scoreless through the first two innings with each team having a combined three hits.
The Bronchos were the first to score in the top of the third off of two hits while keeping the Roadrunners scoreless. Central Oklahoma would strike again in the top of the fourth scoring one more run to extend its lead to 2-0.
The Roadrunner cut the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth off a single through the right side from junior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) to drive freshman Tess Hass home.
The rest of the game proved to be exciting with the Bronchos scoring another single run in the fifth inning to make the score 3-1.
The Roadrunner pulled off another comeback tying the game in the sixth inning. Smith would hit a two run homer to tie the game at three. With a scoreless seventh inning on both sides the game would go into an extra eighth inning.
The Bronchos scored two runs off of two hits to take the lead 5-3 and putting the pressure on the Roadrunners going into the bottom of the eighth inning.
With the bases loaded for the Roadrunners, Freshman
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) earned a walk to send junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) home. A wild pitch would send Terry and Hass home to score the winning run for the Roadrunners.
The Roadrunners will compete tomorrow at 12:15 in the Championship of the tournament
