Lakewood, Colo. - The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team defeated Colorado Christian 72-70 on Friday, February 24. The Roadrunners improved to 18-10 overall and 14-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Cougars fell to 11-15 overall and 9-15 in the conference.
MSU Denver was led by junior
Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) ending with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Three other Roadrunners ended with double figures with junior
J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) finishing with 17 points and Sophomore
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) ending with 15. Senior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) added 10 points for the Roadrunners.
The first quarter kicked off tied at 2-2 for nearly three minutes until the Roadrunners broke through going on an 11-0 run from 5:49 to 3:17 to go up 13-2. However the cougars answered back scoring the next six points to cut the lead going into the second quarter with MSU Denver on top 16-10.
The Roadrunners brought the energy to the second quarter continuing to stretch the lead after the Cougars made the first bucket. Senior
Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) made a jumper just over a minute into the quarter sending MSU Denver on a 7-0 run and up 23-10 with 7:28 remaining in the half.
The Cougars stole the momentum scoring 11 straight to cut the Roadrunners lead to 2 at 23-21 with 3:13 to go in the half.
The rest of the quarter went back and forth between the two sides with the Roadrunners going into half with the edge 29-27.
Ohrdorf ended the first half with 13 of the 29 points for the Roadrunners. Paine added 8 first half points.
The third quarter continued to be a back and forth battle between the two sides with the Roadrunners taking he largest lead of the quarter at eight points after a made three pointer from senior
Luisa Tago (Medford, Ore./South Medford H.S.).
Squires-Horton scored another one from downtown for the Roadrunners with just over a minute left in the quarter to put MSU Denver up 53-44.
The Roadrunner kept the lead going into the fourth quarter 56-48.
The fourth quarter proved to be a battle with CCU taking the lead 70-69 with 1:22 left in the game.
Two made free throws with a minute left from Ohrdorf ended up being enough for the Roadrunners with the team earning the win 72-70.
MSU Denver will be back in action tomorrow Saturday, February 25 at Colorado School of Mines at 5 p.m.
