Women's Basketball: MSU Denver Falls in Overtime at Colorado Mines

Orhdorf finishes with a double double

Golden, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team fell in overtime 73-67 at Colorado Mines Saturday, February 25. The Roadrunners fell to 18-11 overall and 14-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers improved to 17-14 overall and 13-9 in the RMAC.
 
The Roadrunners were led by juniors J'Nae Squires Horton, finishing the game with 22 points and Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) completing a double double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Both teams shot 28 percent from the field in the game.
 
MSU Denver made came out of the gate scoring the first four points of the game, but the Orediggers answered back right after scoring the next six to take the lead.
 
The Roadrunners gained the momentum back going on a 9-2 run to end the first quarter on top 13-8 and carry the energy into the second quarter in which MSU Denver never lost the lead. Going into half the Roadrunners led the Orediggers 36-28. The Roadrunners shot 38 percent from the field in the first half while holding the Orediggers to 25 percent.  
 
Colorado Mines came out on fire to start the second half, scoring the first 11 points of the third quarter and taking the lead at 39-36. The Oredeiggers held the Roadrunners scoreless until just 2:59 to go in the third when Ohrdorf would go on to score six points for the Roadrunners to regain the lead at 42-39 with two minutes remaining in the third.
 
Colorado Mines regained the lead going into the fourth quarter 46-43.
 
The Roadrunners entered the fourth quarter bringing the energy and stealing back the lead after a 6-0 run through the first two minutes of the quarter taking the lead 49-46. But two back to back buckets from behind the arch would get the Orediggers right back in the game, regaing a 52-49 lead with 6:35 remaining in the game.
 
Colorado Mines were able to maintain the lead for the following four minutes of the quarter until a three-pointer from sophomore Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) would put the Roadrunners up by one at 56-55 with 2:36 left in the game.
 
The Orediggers regained the lead 58-56 after converting a three-point play with 1:40 to go. Squires-Horton would counter back tying the game off a jumper.
 
With both sides getting stops, the next points wouldn't be scored until there was just 14.7 seconds left, when Ohrdorf scored a layup to put the Roadrunners up 60-58. After an Orediggers timeout, Colorado Mines was able to tie the game in the remaining seconds to send the game into overtime tied at 60.
 
Two converted free throws from sophomore Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) opened up the overtime scoring for both sides to put the Roadrunners up 62-60.
 
With 3:37 left in overtime a Mines layup would send the Orediggers on a 9-0 run to gain a six-point lead with 22 seconds remaining. Squires-Horton scored one from downtown with 11 seconds to go, but that would not be enough as Colorado Mines  would end the game on top 73-67.
