Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team took two games from CSU-Pueblo on Monday to complete the four-game sweep over the weekend. The Roadrunners are now 10-7 overall and 4-0 in RMAC play.
In the first game, the Roadrunners found themselves trailing 2-0 after giving up a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning. MSU Denver responded in the bottom of the first with a run of its own when junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) hit a double scoring senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.). MSU Denver trailed 2-1 after one inning of play.
MSU Denver opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Lovas started off a string of singles and the scoring. She hit a single to center field that would bring home freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School). Espinoza then singled to score senior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.). Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled to bring home Lovas, and junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled to plate Espinoza. The Roadrunners led 5-2 after the second inning.
The game would remain 5-2 until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Roadrunners tacked on another run. Junior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) entered the game to pinch hit and scored Anderson. The Roadrunners would allow two unearned runs to score in the top of the seventh inning, but it would not be enough as MSU Denver claimed the 6-4 victory in game one.
The second game of the doubleheader saw the Roadrunners jump out to an early lead in the bottom of the second inning. Senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) hit an RBI single to start the scoring with the bases loaded. Fields then was hit by a pitch to plate junior
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.). Lovas hit a single to left field that would bring home two more runs. CSU-Pueblo was able to get out of the inning after allowing four runs and leaving the bases loaded with Roadrunners.
In the top of the third inning, CSU-Pueblo would get its only two runs of the game on a two-run homerun to left-center field. The score would remain 4-2 in favor of MSU Denver until the bottom of the fourth inning.
Smith tallied another single in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring Lovas for the second time in the game. Anderson hit her first homerun of the season to bring the score to 7-2.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Roadrunners posted three runs to complete the five-inning walk-off. Espinoza hit a two-run RBI double and Anderson added a single to bring the game to a close. MSU Denver complete the doubleheader and weekend sweep with a 10-2 victory in five innings.
