Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated UCCS 8-2 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon to move to 12-7 overall and 6-0 in the RMAC.
Junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) opened the scoring for the Roadrunners in a big way in the bottom of the second inning with a solo homerun to left field. The next batter, junior
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.), followed with a solo homerun of her own. After loading the bases, senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) singled to right field and drove in two runs giving the Roadrunners a 4-0 lead.
UCCS picked up two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but the Roadrunners responded. Junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) hit a sacrifice fly and drove in senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.). Two batters later, Anderson picked up two more RBIs when she hit a double to center field and advanced to third base on a throwing error. The score was 7-2 in favor of MSU Denver after the fourth inning.
The Roadrunners added one more run in the bottom of the sixth inning when senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) doubled to right field and scored senior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.). The first game of the doubleheader went to the Roadrunners 8-2 and Smith picked up the victory in the pitching circle.
In the second game of the day, UCCS took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning after scoring one run in the top of the first and one run in the top of the third inning. MSU Denver picked up its first run of the second game in the bottom of the third inning when Espinoza singled driving in Bakovich. The Roadrunners trailed 2-1 after three innings.
MSU Denver tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) hit a double to right-center field bringing home Anderson from first base.
Lovas came through for the Roadrunners in the bottom of the fifth inning. She hit a double to left-center field that brought in Fields, the game's winning run. Fields earned the victory for the Roadrunners to move to 4-1 on the season.
MSU Denver will face UCCS on Sunday, March 5 for two games beginning at 12 noon at The Regency Athletic Complex.
