Women’s Basketball: MSU Denver Falls in Overtime at South Dakota Mines

Ohrdorf finishes with double double

Rapid City, S.D.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team lost in overtime 58-48 South Dakota Mines. The Roadrunners fell to 14-10 and 10-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Hardrockers improved to 10-13 overall and 8-10 in conference.
 
Junior Georgia Ohrdorf (Wollongong, Australia/St. Mary Star of the Sea College) led the Roadrunners with double double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 boards. Sophomore Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) ended the night with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Senior Luisa Tago (Medford, Ore./South Medford H.S.) finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds.
 
MSU Denver got on the board to begin the game when sophomore Jonalyn Wittwer (Fall Creek, Wis./Fall Creek H.S.) scored a jumper. South Dakota responded by scoring the next seven to go up by five with just over six minutes to go in the first quarter. Only seven more points would be scored the remainder of the quarter with the Roadrunners scoring three and the Hardrockers four and ending the quarter on top 10-6.
 
The Hardrockers led the game by seven early in the second quarter but J'Nae Squires-Horton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sand Creek H.S.) gave the spark to the Roadrunners, cutting the lead to four after burying one from downtown. However, the Hardrockers continued to put the pressure on and held the Roadrunners to six more points in the quarter to take the lead at half 23-15.
 
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) and Wittwer finished the half with four points. Ohrdorf finished the half with four rebounds. The Roadrunners shot 27 percent in the first half while the Hardrockers shot 29 percent.
 
The Roadrunners came out strong in the second half starting on an 8-0 run to tie the game up at 23 five minutes into the quarter. The Hardrockers would go on to score the next four but senior Jenae Paine (Oregon City, Ore./Oregon City H.S.) answered back with a three to bring the game within one at 27-26.
 
Free throws carried the Hardrockers into the fourth quarter leading the Roadrunners by four at 34-30.
 
The Hardrockers scored one from behind the arch to start the last quarter to extend their lead to seven and would lead by as many as nine in the quarter.
 
The Roadrunner made a strong run to cut the lead to two with under a minute remaining in the game. A drained jumper from Paine with 10 seconds left sent the game into overtime tied 43-43.
 
The Hardrockers went on 5-0 run holding the Roadrunners scoreless for nearly three minutes. They would continue the momentum taking an 11-point lead with one minute remaining in overtime.
 
The Hardrockers would go on to win 58-48 in overtime.
 
The Roadrunners will return to host Chadron State Friday, February 10 at 5 p.m.
