Durango, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Fort Lewis 10-1 and 17-0 in both games of a double-header on Sunday. Metro State is now 18-7 overall with a record of 12-0 in the RMAC.
In game one the roadrunners started off strong scoring two runs in the top of the first. Senior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) doubled to left field and then scored when senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) also doubled to left. Junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled to left two batters later to score Lovas. The Skyhawks responded in the bottom of the first inning scoring their only run of the game.
Sophomore
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) helped spark a big second inning for the Roadrunners when she singled to the pitcher and then stole second. Senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) doubled to left field to score Kim. Bakovich advance to third when Fields reached on a fielder's choice. Lovas singled to left to score Bakovich, and Lovas later scored herself when junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) doubled to left to cap a four- run inning putting the roadrunners ahead 6-1.
The Roadrunners added another run in the fourth inning after Lovas singled to center field and Anderson drove her in with an RBI single to left-center. MSU Denver exploded for another three runs on three hits in the fifth inning to take a 10-1 lead which would be the final score.
In game two the offensive onslaught continued with the roadrunners posting 13 hits. Fields and Anderson scored two runs each and Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Junior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) added two each for the Roadrunners. Junior
Harley Huser (Thornton, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) led the team with four RBIs and Fields and Smith contributed two each in the MSU Denver 17-0 win.
The Roadrunners return home to the Regency Athletic Complex on Friday, March 17 to take on Colorado Christian University in a double header with games at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.
