Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Colorado Christian on Friday, March 17 in both games of a double header. The Roadrunners improved to 19-7 overall and remains undefeated in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at 14-0. The Cougars fell to 17-9 and 7-3 in conference play.
Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) started the game for the Roadrunners at pitcher. The Cougars were able to put one run up in the first inning after Johnson singled down the left line to score Romero and send the game into the bottom of the first up 1-0.
The Roadrunners were held to a scoreless first inning, however gained the lead in the second putting two runs on the board. The first run came off a single RBI hit from senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) to score Smith. Field then followed, hitting a double to right center to send Bakovich home for the Roadrunners to take a 2-1 lead.
Both teams were scoreless in the third and fourth inning, but both made it back on the board in the fifth. The Cougars scored one run to tie the game at two in the top of the fifth. However, the Roadrunners regain the lead in the bottom. Bakovich reached base on an error with Lovas hitting a single up the middle to score Bakovich. Espinoza was then able to score for the Roadrunners on a Cougar wild pitch, taking the lead 4-2 going into the top of the sixth inning.
MSU Denver put two more runs up in the bottom of the sixth to extend its lead. Bakovich tripled to earn her second RBI of the game soring sophomore
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.). Junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) then hit a single to score Bakovich and the Roadrunners took a 6-4 lead heading into the final inning.
The Roadrunners held the Cougars to a scoreless seventh inning to earn a 6-4 win in game one.
In game two of the day, Fields started at the mound for MSU Denver. CCU was able to put one run on the board in the top of the first and second inning to go ahead 2-0 early with the Roadrunners being held scoreless and hitless in the first two innings.
Freshman Darby Mcghee entered the game at pitcher in the third with zero outs. CCU continued to put the offensive pressure on in the top of the third inning, scoring two more runs with the bases loaded and no outs. The Cougars scored their third and final run in the inning on a Roadrunners wild pitch, holding a 5-0 edge over the Roadrunners going into the bottom of the third.
MSU Denver found energy in the third with earning three hits in a row early in the inning. Bakovich started off hitting a double to left field with Fields following with a double down the left line to score Bakovich for the Roadrunners first run of the game. That would prove to be the lone run scored in the inning with the Cougars still up 5-1 leading into the fourth inning.
Junior
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) lead off the fifth inning drilling one out of the park for the Roadrunners. Smith followed hitting a single up the middle. McGhee then hit a double to right field scoring Smith, cutting the lead to 5-3. Fields would hit a single to right field to scoring McGhee for the third and final run of the inning for MSU Denver with the Cougars still on top 5-4.
MSU Denver brought fire to the sixth inning as well with Kim hitting a double to left field and Bakovich following with a single RBI to right field to send Kim home for the tying run. Bakovich would go on to score the go ahead run at 6-5 with senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) hitting a sacrifice fly to right field.
The sixth inning would prove to be enough in the thrilling 6-5 comeback, with the Roadrunners holding CCU to a scoreless seventh inning.
MSU Denver will wrap up the series against CCU Saturday, March 18 in a double header with the first game beginning at 12 noon.
