Denver - The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split a doubleheader against Colorado Christian on the second day of the two-day series. The Roadrunners are now 21-8 overall and 15-1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Cougars are 18-10 overall and 8-4 in conference.
In game one of the doubleheader, the Roadrunners fell 1-0 to tally their first conference loss of the season. In game two of the day, the Roadrunners earned a 9-1 win in six innings.
Senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) started in the circle in game one for the Roadrunners with the game proving to be a pitcher's dual. Both sides held each other scoreless through the sixth inning.
The lone run of the game came for the Cougars in the top of the sixth inning when the bases were loaded. Day hit a sacrifice fly to score Riesenmy, proving to be the difference maker in game one.
The Roadrunners were unable to match the run in the bottom of the sixth or seventh win dropping their first game in the RMAC.
Junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) was the starting pitcher for MSU Denver in game two of the doubleheader. The Roadrunners made it on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first inning. Fields was able to make it on base on a walk, with Anderson hitting a double to left field to send Fields home and give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning, scoring one run on three hits in the inning.
After holding the Cougars scoreless in the fourth inning, the Roadrunners put up a strong fourth inning of their own regaining the lead scoring three runs. Freshman Darby McGhee sent two runs home off a double to center field. McGhee would then go on to score the final run of the inning on a Cougar error.
The Roadrunners ended the game in the sixth inning scoring five runs on five hits. Smith started the scoring hitting a double to score Anderson and and freshman Tes Haas. Fields would also hit a double to score senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) and sophomore
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.). Fields was sent home for the final run of the game off a double from senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).
The Roadrunners will be home on Tuesday, March 21 for a doubleheader against Fort Hays State with the first game beginning at 4 p.m.
