Wichita Falls, Texas- The University of Denver men's and women's tennis team fell at Midwestern State on Tuesday, March 21. The men fell 6-3 while the women fell 8-1.
In doubles competition on the men's side the Roadrunners won one of the three matches. In No. 1 doubles senior
Josh Graetz (Albury, Australia/The Scots School) and sophomore
Joey Tscherne (Sylmar, Calif./John F. Kennedy H.S.) fell 8-6. Senior
Sam Stember (Melbourne, Fla./Satellite H.S.) and sophomore
Keenan Kaltenbacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./The Classical Academy) fell 8-5. Junior
Calum Hayes (Leeds, England/Guiseley H.S.) and freshman Alejandro Martinez- Morilla took the only win in singles winning 8-5.
In singles the Roadrunners took two of the six matches. Graetz was defeated 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 singles. Tscherne took the win in No. 2 singles 7-5, 7-6 (7-5). Martinez-Morilla also got a win for the Roadrunners in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5). Stember fell 6-3, 6-0. Kaltenbacher lost his match in two sets 6-3, 6-1. Hayes fell 6-4, 6-2.
In doubles matches on the women's side, the Roadrunners won one of the three matches. The win went to juniors
Emily Kerr (Winchester, England/Peter Symonds College) and
Courtney Wright (Houston, Texas/Memorial H.S.) in No. 1 doubles 9-8 (8-6). Freshmen
Tabitha Porter (Norwich, England/Northcote College) and
Valerie Valencia (Playas de Tijuana, Mexico/Bonita VIsta High School) fell 8-2 in their doubles match. Junior
Linying Xiao (Guilin, China/St. Mary's Academy (Colo.)) and freshman
Mackenzie Hotan (Beaverton, Oregon/Southridge High School) fell 8-5.
In doubles competition MSU Denver fell in all six matches. Valencia fell 6-1-6-2 in No. 1 singles. Porter fell in her singles match 6-1, 6-4. Wright fell 6-3, 6-2. Kerr fell in three sets 5-7, 6-0, 10-7. Xiao also fell in three sets in her singles match 6-4, 4-6, 11-9. Freshman
Ainsley Winterrowd (Lacey, Washington/North Thurston High School) fell in her match 7-5, 6-3.
The men will take on Northwest Missouri State tomorrow, Wednesday, March 22 in Wichita Falls, Texas. The women will compete Thursday, March 23 against Dallas Baptist in Dallas, Texas.
