MSU Denver completes four-game sweep on Senior Day

Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team (34-13, 26-6 RMAC) completed a doubleheader sweep of Black Hills State (5-31, 3-25 RMAC) on Saturday winning game one 7-0 and game two 9-1 in five innings.

Senior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) pitched a complete game shutout in the first game for the Roadrunners.  Smith allowed only five hits and struck out three batters.  She did not tally a walk in the game.

The bats were going early for the Roadrunners.  Senior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) went 3-for-4 in the game scoring two runs.  Junior Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) went 2-for-3 with a homerun.  Junior Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) tallied two RBIs in the game while going 2-for-3 from the plate.  The Roadrunners scored in every inning but the second.

The second game of the doubleheader was more of the same from the Roadrunners offense.  Junior Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) smoked a two-run homerun to centerfield in the bottom of the third inning.  Not to be outdone, Anderson crushed a three-run homerun in the bottom of the bottom of the fourth, her second of the day.

Fields allowed one run on seven hits in the game.  She did not walk a batter and struck out two.  Fields moves to 14-3 on the season as a starter.

MSU Denver will return to action on April 22-23 for a four-game series at Colorado School of Mines.
