Softball: Roadrunners Fall In Doubleheader at Mines

Roadrunners continue series tomorrow in Golden

Golden, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader against Colorado School of Mines on Saturday, April 22. The Roadrunners fell 7-5 in the first game and fell in 10 innings 3-2 in the second game.
 
In game one of the double header Senior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) started on the mound for the Roadrunners. The Orediggers came out with a big first inning. After holding the Roadrunners scoreless in the first, Colorado Mines hit a three run homer to take a 3-0 lead.
 
The Roadrunners answered back in the top of the second making it on the board scoring two runs to cut the Orediggers lead to 3-2. Smith and McGhee both reached base on a single followed by two stolen bases from both. Junior Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) then hit a single to score both runs.
 
Both teams made it on the board in the fourth inning with the Orediggers having the edge 3-1. The Roadrunners scored their run off a home run hit by junior Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.). However, the Orediggers extend the lead scoring three runs to take a 6-3 lead.
 
Colorado Mines scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth to go up 7-3 on the Roadrunners.
 
MSU Denver fought hard for the comeback in the top of the seventh. Junior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) hit another one out of the park scoring two runs for the Roadrunners and cutting the lead to 7-5. With the bases loaded and two outs the Roadrunners continued to fight, however, were unable to even the score, falling 7-5.
 
The second game proved to be a close battle between the two sides with the game going into extra innings.
 
Colorado Mines made it on the board first in game two scoring two runs in the bottom of the second off three hits.
 
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Orediggers until the top of the fifth with the Roadrunners were able to score a run on an Orediggers error to bring the score to 2-1.
 
MSU Denver evened the score at two in an exciting seventh inning. With Smith reaching base on a single, senior Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) hit a single up the middle to score Smith tying the game at two a piece.
 
After holding the Orediggers scoreless in the bottom of the seventh the game was sent into extra innings.
 
The Roadrunners were unable to score in the eighth, earning one hit in the innings. The Orediggeres were able to end the game in the bottom of the inning sending on out of the park to earn the 3-2 win.
 
The two sides will be back in action tomorrow in Golden with the first game of the doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
