Softball: MSU Denver Splits against Regis

Roadrunners fall in first game and bounce back in the second

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split its double header against Regis on Sunday, April 2. The Roadrunners fell 6-2 in game one, but bounced back to take game two 11-3.
 
In game one, senior Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) started on the mound for the Roadrunners. Regis was able to make it on the board in the bottom of the first after holding the Roadrunners scoreless.  The Rangers took a 1-0 lead.
 
The score remained through the fourth inning when the Rangers were able to put three more runs up on five hits, taking a 4-0 lead.
 
The Roadrunners fought back in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs. Senior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) hit a double to left center to score freshman Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) and Smith, cutting the Rangers lead to 4-2.
 
The Rangers matched the Roadrunners fifth inning, scoring two more runs of their own which proved to be enough in game one. MSU Denver was unable to score in the last inning, giving the Rangers a 6-2 win.
 
Fields started in the circle for the Roadrunners in game two with the Roadrunners making it on the board first in the first inning. Junior Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) hit a single to score senior Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.).
 
The score remained in the Roadrunners favor at 1-0 until the fifth inning when MSU Denver put three more runs up. The first two came off a double, hit by Espinoza, to score junior Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Bakovich. The final run of the inning happened when McGhee hit a single to score freshman Tess Hass.
 
The Rangers put a run on the board in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-1.  However, the Roadrunners exploded in the top of the seventh scoring seven runs off six hits with Anderson leading off the inning with a home run to right field.
 
The Rangers were unable to catch the Roadrunners in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs and ending the game at 11-3.
 
The Roadrunners will wrap up the series against the Rangers Monday, April 3 with the first game scheduled for 12 noon.
