Softball: Roadrunners Drop Two Games Against Orediggers

Roadrunners fall 3-2 and 9-8

Golden, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader and Colorado School of Mines. Both games were decided by one run with the Roadrunners falling 3-2 in the first game and 9-8 in the second game. The Roadrunners fell to 34-17 overall and 26-10 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers improved to 29-13 overall and 26-10 in conference play.
 
In the first game of the double header the Roadrunners the Roadrunners got the game going scoring one run in the top of the first inning to take the first lead of the game at 1-0. Junior Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) earned the RBI in the inning, sending Junior Collissa Bakovich home.
 
Freshman Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started in the pitcher's circle for the Roadrunners in game one. The Roadrunners kept the Orediggers scoreless through the first two innings until Colorado Mines was able to tie the game at one in the bottom of the third inning.  The Roadrunners held the Oredigger to one run off three hits and two left on base going into the fourth tied 1-1.
 
Terry answered back for the Roadrunners in the top of the fourth hitting one out of the park to regain the lead at 2-1. However, Colorado Mines tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth after the lead off hitter in the inning made it on base off a single to right field. With two outs the Orediggers was able to send a runner home to tie the game at 2-2.
 
The score would remain tied at two through the sixth and seventh inning to send game one of the doubleheader into extra innings.
 
The Roadrunners were held to a scoreless and hitless eighth inning and were able to hold the Orediggers scoreless on two hits and two left on base. However, the Orediggers were able to take the game in the bottom of the ninth inning earning a 3-2 win in game one.
 
Senior Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) started at pitcher for the Roadrunners in game two of the doubleheader.
 
After a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Roadrunners exploded in the second inning going up on the Orediggers by four starting the inning off with three straight singles from junior Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.), McGhee, and Fields.  Junior Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) sent three runs home hitting a double to right center, putting the Roadrunners up 3-0.  Junior Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) was able to score Anderson for the final run of the inning hitting a double down the right line.
 
The Roadrunners followed their big fourth inning with a strong adding three more runs off 3 hits and a Oredigger error. Anderson and Fields both earned an RBI in the inning.
 
Colorado Mines made it on the board in the bottom of the third inning scoring one run to cut MSU Denver's lead to 7-1.
 
The score remained a 7-1 in favor of the Roadrunners until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Orediggers exploded for five runs to cut the Roadrunners big lead down to 7-6 heading into the sixth inning.
 
Colorado Mines evened up the score in the sixth on a Roadrunners error. But the Roadrunners came back to take the lead in the top of the seventh when with Espinoza hitting a single down the right line to score senior Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) for the go ahead run 8-7.
 
That proved to be not enough as the Orediggers were able to score two runs off a walk off and take the win at 9-8.
 
The Roadrunners wills travel to Adams State next Saturday, April 29.
