Alamosa, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball ( 34-19, 26-12 RMAC) team fell in two games against Adams State (19-29, 18-20 RMAC ) in Alamosa. MSU Denver fell 7-15 in the first game and 8-13 in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Roadrunner's offense had a quiet first inning, going down in order. Freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started in the circle for the Roadrunners in game one. The Grizzlies got to McGhee quickly. An error in left field put a Grizzly on second base. A wild pitch allowed the runner to advance to second. A walk and a stolen base put runners on second and third with no outs. After a strikeout for out number one, an infield hit allowed a run to score for Adams State. A home run quickly put MSU Denver in an early 4-0 hole. The Grizzlies loaded the bases again, but McGhee got a groundout to get out of the inning without any more damage done.
In the top of the second, the Roadrunner offense started up. Junior
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) walked and senior
Cassidy Smith (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) singled to put runners on first and third. Junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) slashed a base hit through the left side to get the roadrunners on the board. A base hit by senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) loaded the bases, and an error by the short stop allowed two more runners to score, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Grizzlies.
The Grizzlies kept the bats going in the bottom of the second inning. A base hit and a walk left runners on first and second. A flare in shallow center scored the runner from second to make the score 5-3.
Junior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) drew a walk to start the top of the third for MSU Denver. Anderson stole second, and with two outs McGhee hit an RBI single to center to cut the Grizzly lead to one at 5-4.
But the Grizzlies would go on to explode in the bottom of the third inning scoring five runs to go up on the Roadrunners 10-5.
The Roadrunners fought for the comeback scoring two runs of a senior Collissa Bakovich RBI and junior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) RBI. However, the Grizzlies would go on to seal the deal in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a grand slam while adding another run to to earn the 15-7 win over the Roadrunners.
In game two of the doubleheader MSU Denver made it on the board first in the top of the first. Senior
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.) kicked off the inning hitting a single up the middle to make it on base. Bakovich then followed, making it on base off a fielder's choice, Lovas advanced to second on a Grizzly error. Anderson was then able to hit a single to send Lovas home for the first run of the game. Espinoza kept the Roadrunners going, hitting a single to score Bakovich and Anderson. Terry would then send Espinoza home for the final run of the inning, with the Roadrunners on top 4-0.
Adams State would go on to answer back in the bottom of the inning scoring a three run homer to cut the Roadrunners lead to 4-3.
MSU Denver came up with another big inning in the top of the second, scoring three more runs. Junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) and Lovas both reached base on a single. Bakovich followed grounding out to their shortstop, but was able to send Kim home for a run. Anderson then hit one out of the park to clear the bases and put the Roadrunners up 7-3.
Adams State would go on to explode in the bottom of the second scoring six runs off two hits. After loading the bases the Grizzlies would take advantage earning six runs off a single and triple, taking their first lead of the game at 9-7.
The third inning was scoreless for both sides with the Grizzlies adding another run in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the fifth to go up 13-7.
The Roadrunners added their final run of the game in the top of the sixth with Kim scoring on a Adams State passed ball.
Both teams were scoreless for the remainder of the game with the Grizzlies earning the 13-8 win over the Roadrunners.
MSU Denver will be back in action in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament next week. Games times and opponents are to be announced.
