Chadron, Neb.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split its double header on Saturday, April 8 against Chadron State. The Roadrunners are now 30-11 overall and 22-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The Roadrunners fell 11-0 in the first game of the day but bounced back to take the second game 6-3.
In game one both teams were scoreless through to the third inning, but the Eagles would break the seal to explode for seven runs in the third, scoring a three run home run.
The Eagles scored four more runs in the fourth on three hits and held the Roadrunners scoreless in the fifth to end the game in five innings at 11-0.
Freshman
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started on the mound for the Roadrunners in game two holding the Eagles to a scoreless first inning. Chadron did make it on the board first in game two, scoring a run in the bottom of the second to go up 1-0.
The second inning was scoreless for both sides but the Roadrunners would control the third inning putting five runs up on the Eagles. Junior
Harley Huser (Thornton, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) led off the inning reaching base on a single. Junior
Hayley Fields (Arlington, Wash./Arlington H.S.) reached base on a single as well, followed by senior
Colissa Bakovich (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) earning a RBI to score Huser for the tying run. To continue the hot inning for the Roadrunners
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.),
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.), McGhee,
Brooke Lovas (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills H.S.), and
Carissa Terry (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View H.S.) would all hit singles to score the five runs.
MSU Denver kept the 5-1 edge over the Roadrunner through till the sixth inning with the Roadrunners adding one more run on a Bakovich RBI. The Eagles went on to score two runs off three hits in the bottom of the sixth to cut the Roadrunners lead to 6-3.
The Roadrunners were able to hold the score and 6-3 to earn the win in the second game of the double header.
MSU Denver will continue its four game series at Chadron Sunday, April 9 with the first game beginning at 12 noon.
