Austin, Texas-Â The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team played at No. 9 St. Edward's in its first game of the 2017 season. The Roadrunners fell 2-1 to the Hilltoppers.

The Hilltoppers put the pressure on to start the first half of the game getting the first three shots off within the first 13 minutes. However, the Roadrunners were the first to make it on the board in the 22
nd minute. Following a corner kick from junior
Rafael Munoz-Vega (Las Vegas, Nevada/Southeast Technical Academy), junior
Hector Banegas (Tucson, Ariz./Rincon H.S.) took a shot that was deflection and sophomore
Dylan Wood (Wellington, New Zealand/Onslow College) was there to find the back of the bet for the Roadrunners.

St. Edward's fought back putting the Roadrunners defense under pressure and would answer back in the 32
nd minute when a cross connected with the head of Ty Mobley to hit the post and go into the Roadrunners net, tying the game up 1-1.

The Hilltoppers continued to press for the go-ahead, earning two more corners and firing three more shots in the half, but the Roadrunners defense was able to hold them off to send the game into half tied up at one.

St. Edwards came out on fire in the second half getting two shots on goal in the first eight minutes of the half with junior goal keeper
James Tanner (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens H.S.) coming up big with two saves for the Roadrunners.

MSU Denver was able to hold St. Edward's off until the 84
th minute when St. Edwards was awarded a penalty kick to score the difference maker.Â

The final score ended at 2-1 in favor of the Hilltoppers. The Roadrunners were out –shot 7-1 with the Hilltoppers earning 12 corners to the Roadrunners 2.

The Roadrunners will wrap up its road trip Sunday, September 3 at 1 p.m. CT against Saint Mary's in San Antonio.Â
