San Antonio, Texas- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team fell 4-3 in its second game in if the season this weekend to St. Mary's University Sunday, September 3. The Roadrunners finished the weekend going 0-2 overall the Rattlers improved to 2-0 on the season.
Both teams managed to get eight shots on goal in the game, but the Rattlers were able to put one more past the Roadrunners winning by a score of 4-3.
The Rattlers made it on the board first early in the game off a free kick in the sixth minute. They would be the next to strike as well in the 36
th minute when a cross would find the foot of Arturo Sanchez who was able to score from six yards out.
The Roadrunner's looked like they were going to head into the second half down 2-0, but freshman midfielder
Moritz Walther (Heidelberg, Germany /Otteinrich- Gymnasium) buried a beautiful free kick from outside the box in the 43
rd minute giving the Roadrunners a strong ending to the half and posting his first career goal at MSU Denver.
MSU Denver carried the momentum into the second half striking right away when junior forward,
Hector Banegas (Tucson, Ariz./Rincon H.S.), tied the game at two just over minute into the half also scoring his first goal as a Roadrunner. However, the Rattlers came back at the Roadrunners scoring just under two minutes after scoring off a deflection on the top of the box.
The score remained 3-2 in favor of St. Mary's until the 61
st minute when junior forward,
Jacob Coking (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton H.S.), from MSU Denver leveled the game at three when he put away a great ball sent into the box assisted by junior forward,
Rafael Munoz-Vega (Las Vegas, Nevada/Southeast Technical Academy). It was Cokings first goal of the season and at MSU Denver.
The Rattlers got in behind the MSU Denver's back line in in the 77
th minute to score the fourth goal dagger.
The Roadrunners look to rebound at home this weekend where they take on Seattle Pacific University at The Regency Athletic Complex on Thursday, September 7 at 6 p.m.
