Men’s Soccer: Strong Offense Leads to 4-0 Win Over CCU

Four different Roadrunners score in 4-0 win

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (2-5-0) defeated Colorado Christian (1-5-1) 4-0 on Wednesday, September 20.

MSU Denver came out of the gates on fire, immediately putting pressure on the Cougars defense. Nils Runnberg (Barsebäck, Sweden/Jensen Education) gave the Roadrunners an early spark, scoring the first goal of the game in the third minute of the game.  Runnberg got the ball on the left side of the field and dribbled to the end line to finish a shot with close to no angle, scoring in the far right corner of the net.

The Roadrunners didn't let down, continuing to go at the Cougars. The Roadrunners defense was strong as well, holding the Cougars to zero first half shots, barely allowing CCU in their defensive half.

MSU Denver would go on to finish the half strong, with sophomore Dylan Wood (Wellington, New Zealand/Onslow College) scoring the second goal of the half off a header on a corner from freshman Bryan Castruita, sending the game into half with the Roadrunners holding the 2-0 edge.

The flame for the Roadrunners continued for the Roadrunners into the second half with the team continuing to hold control of the game.

Sophomore Yannick Schad (Munich, Germany/Theodolinden-Gymnasium) scored the third goal for the Roadrunners in the 63rd minute when the Roadrunners were rewarded a penalty kick off a foul in the box. Schad stepped up to burry his third PK of the season.

CCU had its best chance with just over four minutes remaining in the game.  The cross bar turned out to be the Roadrunners best friend when a Cougar forward hit a solid header for it to bounce back to the MSU Denver defense.

The Roadrunners ended the game with a spark as junior Javier Arellano (Fort Lupton, Colo./Fort Lupton High School) received a ball from junior Nicholas Bender (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) in the box to beat one defender and burry the fourth goal of the game into the back of the net for his first Roadrunner career goal.

The Roadrunners will be back in action Friday when they host South Dakota Mines at the Regency Athletic Complex at 7 p.m.
