Men’s Soccer: Roadrunners Earn 2-0 Win Over Hardrockers

Second straight home win for Roadrunners

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team (3-5-0) defeated South Dakota Mines (2-2-2) on Friday, September 22.

With less than a week between the last time the two sides met both teams came out the first half strong and ready to play. The Roadrunners maintained most possession in their offensive half earning an early penalty kick in the 21st minute of the half.  The Hardrockers goalkeeper came up strong for his team making a great save to keep the score 0-0.

However, the Roadrunners continued to press in their offensive half. Sophomore Dylan Wood (Wellington, New Zealand/Onslow College) would answer for the Roadrunners scoring off a deflected header on a corner kick in the 33rd minute.

The rest of the have was a physical battle between the Hardrockers and Roadrunners with a combined 15 first half fouls and several yellow cards, but the score would remain in favor of the Roadrunners going into half at 1-0.

The physical battle continued into the second half, with much of the game being played in the middle of the pitch and in the Roadrunners offensive half.

MSU Denver struck again being dangerous on its sixth corner of the game.  Sophomore Yannick Schad (Munich, Germany/Theodolinden-Gymnasium) played a bullet into the head of Nils Runnberg (Barsebäck, Sweden/Jensen Education) for the Roadrunners to take a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute.

That would prove to be enough as the Roadrunners stopped any offensive attack thrown their way.

The Roadrunners will return to action on at 3 p.m. on Friday, September 29 at Regis.
