Volleyball: MSU Denver Sweeps Adams State

Roadrunners win in three sets

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team (5-6, 2-1 RMAC) defeated Adams State (6-6, 2-1 RMAC)  in three sets on Friday, September 22.

The Roadrunners got off to a strong start going on an early 5-1 lead to start the first set. The Grizzlies however would stay in it, eventually bringing the score within two on several different occasions but MSU Denver would break away to take the first set by seven with a score of 25-17.

The second set was a close battle throughout. The Grizzlies kept the lead through most of the set until the Roadrunners were finally able to tie the set up at 15 on a kill from Senior Vasati Fiatoa (Las Vegas, Nev./Bonanza H.S.). The Roadrunners were then able to score the next three points to take their first lead of the set 18-15. Adams State fought back to bring the score within one, but that would not be enough as the Roadrunner broke away to take a 25-20 second set win.

The Grizzlies started off the third set much like the second holding a lead through much of the first part. MSU Denver wouldn't make a comeback until the end of the set. After being down by as many as five the Roadrunners tied the game at 19 and would only allow the Grizzlies two more points, taking the third set 25-21.

The Roadrunners attack was led by junior Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit H.S.) who posted 12 kills on the night. Junior Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View High School) and freshman Alexis Benda (Las Cruces, N.M./Orate H.S.) added 9 kills for the Roadrunners.
