Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team earned a 63-60 win over CSU-Pueblo on Friday night. The Roadrunners improved to 8-8 overall and 7-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Thunderwolves fell to 6-10 overall and 3-7 in conference.
The first several minutes of the half remained close between the two sides, until the Thunderwolves made a break to take a six-point lead over the Roadrunners.
A drive from sophomore
Cain van Heyningen (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Open schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer) and a three-pointer from senior
Peter Møller (Værløse, Denmark/Falkonergårdens Gymnasium) would bring the score back within one at 13-12 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half.
CSU-Pueblo would hold a lead over the Roadrunners for most of the half until there was just under three minutes left in the half, when a made three from sophomore
Allec Williams (Albany, Ga./Westover High School) would start a 7-0 run for his team to end the half on top 30-27.
Van Heyningen led the Roadrunners at half with eight points and six boards. The Thunderwolves shot 45 percent from the field and held the Roadrunners to 33 percent in the first half.
CSU-Pueblo started the second half strong, shooting 80 percent from the field and going 2-3 from behind the arch in the first five minutes of the half to take the lead from MSU Denver.
Senior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) provided some energy for the Roadrunners with 12:33 left in the game after converting a three-point play to re-gain a 42-40 lead. However, the Thunderwolves would score the next six points steal back a four-point lead.
CSU-Pueblo would maintain a small lead over MSU Denver, but the Roadrunners remained in it. Cam Williams scored one from downtown to tie the game at 58 with two and a half minutes left to play.
The Thunderwolves were able to take the lead at 60-58, but Cam Williams came up with a big drive to tie the game back up at 60 with 41 seconds remaining.
After a stop on the defensive end of the court, the Roadrunners would get the ball back with the score knotted up at 60 with 15 seconds on the clock. Junior
Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) would receive a great pass from junior
Enrique Cortés Zotes (Malaga, Spain/I.E.S. Litoral) under the basket and score to take a 62-60 lead.
The Thunderwolves would have the final possession with eight seconds remaining. Cortés Zotes would intercept a pass and earn a trip to the free throw line to seal the deal for the Roadrunners, taking a 63-60 win.
Cam Williams led the Roadrunners with 19 points. Senior
Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) led the Roadrunners with 10 boards. MSU Denver out rebounded CSU-Pueblo 45-32.
MSU Denver will host New Mexico Highlands Saturday at 7 p.m.
