Men’s Basketball: MSU Denver Controls New Mexico Highlands for a 73-41 Win

Williams finishes the night with 21 points

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated New Mexico Highlands 73-41 to finish the weekend with two home wins.  The Roadrunners improved to 9-8 overall and 8-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Cowboys fell to 11-6 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
 
Senior Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) got the game rolling for the Roadrunners, slamming down a dunk to give his team some energy from the start. MSU Denver would go on to take an early 8-2 lead over the Cowboys. Senior Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) scored six of the first eight points for the Roadrunners.
 
MSU Denver completed a 12-2 run and held New Mexico Highlands through the first fifteen minutes of the half taking a 24-8 lead with 6:48 remaining in the half.
 
The Roadrunners led by as many as 18 in the half, but the Cowboys were able to cut the lead to 10 to finish the half with the Roadrunners on top 31-21.
 
MSU Denver shot 39 percent from the field and 42 percent from behind the arch while holding Highlands to 24 percent from the field in the first half. The Roadrunners were led by junior Enrique Cortés Zotes (Malaga, Spain/I.E.S. Litoral) with 8 first half points.  Keita led the game with eight first half rebounds.
 
MSU Denver carried the momentum into the second half to completely dominate the game. The Roadrunners held Highlands to just six points for nearly 12 minutes of the second half. The team exploded to take a 25-point lead.
 
The Roadrunners continued to show up big on the defensive end to shut down the Cowboys and run away with a huge 73-41 win.
 
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) led all scorers with 21 points, going 6-14 from the field and 2-5 from behind the arch. Keita led the game with 11 rebounds and five blocks.
 
MSU Denver will return home to host Colorado Mesa on Friday, January 19 at 7 p.m.
