Men’s Basketball: Roadrunners Fall on the Road to No. 20 Fort Lewis

Roadrunners fall 94-88

Durango, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team fell 94-88 on the road to No. 20 Fort Lewis on Friday, January 5. The Roadrunners fell to 7-7 overall and 6-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Skyhawks improved to 12-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play.
 
The Roadrunner took the first lead of the game at 3-0 in the opening minute. But the following minutes was a close battle between the two sides. There were five lead changes through the first ten minutes of the half until the Roadrunners were able to make a small breakaway, going on a 6-0 run. Junior Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) had four of the six points.
 
The Roadrunners were able to maintain their lead through the rest of the half. The largest lead of the half came for MSU Denver after another 6-0 run, taking a 34-25 lead with 4:45 remaining in the first half.
 
The Skyhawks answered back going on a 6-0 run to cut the Roadrunners lead, but the Roadrunners were still able to keep the lead heading into half time on top 43-39.
 
Taylor had a huge half for the Roadrunners, scoring 19 first half points. The Roadrunners shot 55 percent from the field while the Skyhawks shot 51 percent in the first half.
 
Senior Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) got the second half going for the Roadrunners knocking down the first five points of the half, extending the Roadrunners lead to 48-39. However, the following five minutes belonged to Fort Lewis.  The Skyhawks outscored the Roadrunners 15-2 to take a four-point lead with 14:11 left in the game.
 
MSU Denver continued to fight taking back the lead at 58-56.
 
A dunk from Fort Lewis would kick-start a 13-2 run for the Skyhawks lasting just over two minutes for the Skyhawks to take a nine-point lead with 7:39 left on the clock.
 
The Skyhawks continued to put the pressure on the Roadrunners taking their largest lead of the game with just under four minutes left at 86-71.
 
Two back-to-back threes from senior Shane Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) and Sophomore Alvaro Reyes-Abad (Malaga, Spain/I.E.S. Felo Manzon Grau Basas) would bring the score back within six with 1:25 remaining, but the Roadrunners were unable to catch Skyhawks. 
 
Fort Lewis took the 94-88 win over MSU Denver. The Roadrunners had five players end the night in double figures.  The team was led by Cam Williams who ended the night with 23 points. Taylor finished the night with 20 points and six boards for the Roadrunners.
 
MSU Denver will take on Adams State on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Alamosa, Colo.
