Durango, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver women's basketball team fell 70-63 on the road against Fort Lewis. The Roadrunners fell to 9-5 overall and 5-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Skyhawks improved to 14-1 overall and 8-1 in the conference.
The first minutes of the first quarter were close between the two teams until the Skyhawks broke away going on a 10-0 rur, holding the Roadrunner scoreless for four minutes. Junior Jonnalyn Wittwer broke the Skyhawks run, scoring one from downtown. A layup from sophomore
Bree Wellington (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan High School) would bring the score to within five with 2:34 remaining in the first quarter.
The final points of the first quarter came from senior J'Nae Squires Horton, putting on in from behind the arch and sending the game into the second quarter with the Skyhawks on top 17-13.
The Roadrunners got off to a strong second quarter scoring four of the first six points. However, Fort Lewis went on another run to extend the teams lead to 10 at 28-18.
Following the run the two sides exchanged several offensive plays, but the Roadrunners were unable to cut the lead before half with the first half score ending with Fort Lewis having the upper hand 32-21.
Horton led the Roadrunners at half with seven points. The Roadrunners shot 34 percent from the field in the first half with the Skyhawks shooting 41 percent.
The Skyhawks kept the momentum up to start the third quarter taking their largest lead of the game at 14 points, but the Roadrunners caught fire wehn Squires-Horton knocked down another three to start a 10-1 run for her team bringing the score within three with just over three minutes left in the quarter.
The Skyhawks then went on a run of their own to gain back a seven-point lead, but the Roadrunners anwered right back ending the quarter with a 6-0 run heading into the fourth quarter with the Skyhawks leading 48-45.
Fort Lewis brought the energy in the fourth quarter outscoring the Roadrunners 9-2 in the opening minutes to regain a 10-point lead over the Roadrunners.
Despite a strong effort, the Roadrunners were unable to make the comeback and the Skyhawks took the 70-63 win.
Squires-Horton finished the night with 23 points. Junior
Jaelynn Smith (Denver, Colo./East H.S.) added 16 points and four assists for the Roadrunners. Senior
Mikala Gordon (Pueblo, Colo./Pueblo H.S.) led the Roadrunners with seven rebounds.
MSU Denver will take on Adams State tomorrow in Alamosa, Colo. at 5:30 p.m.
