@MSUDenverMSOC: UCCS Cools off Roadrunners

Mountain Lions score twice in first half and hold on

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs scored twice in a span of 2:53 in the first half and held on for a 2-0 victory Sunday over the Metropolitan State University of Denver men's soccer team.

Alex VonHolle scored on a penalty kick 19:46 to play in the first half, then Diego Ferradas scored with 16:53 left. It was VonHolle's 10th goal of the season – third-most in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference – while Ferradas scored for the third time. VonHolle also had an assist on Ferradas' goal – VonHolle is second in the league with 27 points.

The Mountain Lions (8-4-3) cooled off a red-hot Roadrunners (8-8) team that had won five of its last six games – including Friday's 5-0 blowout of Regis. UCCS is now 7-3-2 in RMAC play for 23 points, and jumped past 7-5 MSU Denver (21 points) into fourth place in the RMAC table.

The Roadrunners actually slid to sixth, but have opportunities to move back up with games Thursday at Colorado Christian (1-13-1 overall, 1-9-1 RMAC) and at home Sunday against fifth-place Westminster (11-3-1, 7-3-1 for 22 points).

MSU Denver had the advantage in shots (15-12) and shots on goal (6-5), but Scott Jensen posted his sixth shutout of the year for the Mountain Lions.

Gianni Steijlen (Eindhoven, The Netherlands/Summa College) took three shots, with one of them on goal, to lead the Roadrunners' offense. Five other players put shots on goal.
