SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver volleyball team took care of business Friday night during part one of its South Dakota road swing, easily defeating host Black Hills State in three sets (25-18, 25-11, 25-19). With their 10
th sweep of the season and second over the Yellow Jackets, the Roadrunners moved to 16-8 (12-3 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference), while Black Hills State fell to 7-16 (4-12 RMAC).
MSU Denver came out of the gates on fire, jumping out to an 18-4 lead in the first set before Black Hills State found a sense of composure. The Roadrunners eventually won the set, 25-19, limiting BHSU to an .059 hitting percentage in the frame.
The Roadrunners dominated at an even greater level in the second set, hitting .344 while holding BHSU to a measly -.167 clip to win the set, 25-11. All the Roadrunners had to do in the third set was maintain a solid rate of play, which they did, scoring a 25-18 set win to seal the match victory.
Just like their moms back in the day,
Taylor Duryea (Logan, Utah/Sky View) and
Kayla White (Montgomery, Ala./Montgomery Academy) were an effective duo Friday night. Duryea led MSU Denver in kills once again, recording 10 and adding 11 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Meanwhile, White had one of her more efficient matches of the year, hitting .438 with eight kills against just one error and adding four blocks. White's hitting percentage marked her second best clip of the 2018 campaign.
Lyric Hebert (Arvada, Colo./Ralston Valley) had a team-high 22 digs, her eighth match of the season with at least 20.
Santaisha Sturges (Parker, Colo./Regis Jesuit) chipped in nine kills and seven digs, while
Alyssa Kelling (Merton, Wis./Arrowhead) had four kills and six blocks.
Stephanie Laraway (Lakewood, Colo./Lakewood) posted six kills and three blocks on .500 hitting.
Black Hills State failed to reach 20 points in a set during the season series between the two schools, as MSU Denver won all six sets by a combined score of 150-94. The Roadrunners have not dropped a set to the Yellow Jackets since Oct. 29, 2016, and have never lost to BHSU in 12 tries, winning 36 sets in the all-time series while Black Hills State has won just four.
MSU Denver will remain in South Dakota on Saturday to face South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. The Roadrunners' final regular season road match is set for a 3 p.m. MT start in Rapid City.
