@MSUDenverWSOC: Roadrunners Back on Track

Banks has goal, assist in 4-1 victory

ALAMOSA, Colo. – The MSU Denver women's soccer team got back on the winning track Friday with a 4-1 victory over Adams State.

Metropolitan State University of Denver (7-3-1 overall, 5-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) had lost two straight road games after opening RMAC play 4-0 with four shutouts.

"It was all about our energy from the moment we stepped on the field, coming off a weekend like we did, and bouncing back," MSU Denver coach Tracy Chao said. "As much scouting as we do, this was really about focusing on us and how we perform."

The Roadrunners got a goal and an assist from Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield), who had been held without a point for four consecutive games after opening the season with nine goals in six games.

Brooklynn Mooney (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield), Makenna Brassard (Thornton, Colo./Horizon) and Jordan Lewis (Bakersfield, Calif./Frontier) also scored goals for the Roadrunners, who play Sunday at noon at Fort Lewis.

Mooney scored her first goal of the season on a free kick from 15 yards out in the 30th minute.

"It was a nice free kick from the top of the box," Chao said. "Reigna has been doing a great job getting into the box and she did that again and got taken out. Brooklyn stepped up and read the wall and put it to a place where the goalkeeper couldn't get to it. She didn't hit it hard, just put it to a spot in the corner that was open."

Paloma Teran (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) picked up her first assist of the year as Banks scored her 10th goal in the 57th minute.

Then MSU Denver made it 3-0 as Brassard scored her second goal of the season from the middle off the box, off a pass from Banks, in the 62nd minute. It was set up on a corner kick by Jessica Mooney (Broomfield, Colo./Broomfield).

"Getting some assists, that's been something Reigna wanted to work on," Chao said. "Scoring is great, but how else can she help us. She took the corner from Jessica and flicked it to Makenna, who tapped it in. It was a nice little combination.

"We've been talking about being more creative in the final third (of the field), and we were extremely creative today, which is fun to watch."

MSU Denver's final goal came on a free kick from Lewis from 20 yards out in the 85th minute, making it 4-1.

The Roadrunners put 18 shots on goal, compared to just three for Adams State (2-8, 1-5).

"This was a good game for us, from the goalkeeper through the front line," Chao said. "I wish we had kept a clean sheet, but at the end of the day it's about scoring more goals than the other team."
