DURANGO, Colo. --
Reigna Banks (Bakersfield, Calif./Bakersfield) would not be denied.
Â
And yet coach
Tracy Chao said Banks' virtuoso game-winning goal didn't come alone.
Â
Metropolitan State University of Denver's senior forward dribbled through defenders and scored the golden goal in the 97
th minute Sunday for a 1-0, overtime victory at Fort Lewis.
Â
"I truly believe the players on the sideline cheered Reigna to the goal," Chao said.
Â
Banks got the ball in the Roadrunners' defensive half and went nearly coast-to-coast for her 11
th goal of the season and second of the weekend.
Â
"She found space to break through and was determined to get to goal," Chao said. "She ended up pushing by a couple defenders and the goalkeeper came out, and she just chipped it right over the goalkeeper's head."
Â
With 31 career goals, Banks needs four more to tie Kari Pierce for eighth place in school history.
Â
With a second straight road victory, MSU Denver improved to 8-3-1 overall and maintained third place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference att 6-2. Fort Lewis dropped to 4-6-1 and 3-4.
Â
MSU Denver had overwhelming advantages of 19 shots to three, and eight shots on goal to two.
Still, the grueling second game of the weekend stayed tied.
"That was a battle, even though we had the majority of chances," Chao said. "It wasn't going to come easy. Sundays are great tests for teams whether you're home or away.
Â
"And I'll tell you that it was going to take every ounce of energy from every player on the field and off. OT is about mentality and heart and I'm proud of how this team responded."
Â
That's because in overtime it only takes one goal.
Â
And Banks got it.
Â
"As many chances as we had, it's about the golden goal," Chao said, "which again was a total team effort."
