Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team defeated Sioux Falls 14-3 in game two of the three game series on Saturday, February 17. The Roadrunners improved to 3-4 while the Cougars dropped to 0-2.
The Roadrunners out hit the Cougars 19-6. Ortiz ended the day leading the Roadrunners going five for five on the playe . Seniors Donny Ortiz Jr. and
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) also posted three RBIs for MSU Denver.
Junior
Cade Crader (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) got the start on the mound for the Roadrunners and held the Cougars scoreless in the top of the first inning.
Senior
Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) lead off for the Roadrunners hitting a double down the left field line. Ortiz hit second for MSU Denver and reached on a single. Senior
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) would send the first run home on a ground out and Ortiz would score the final run of the inning on a Cougars wild pitch to go up 2-0.
The second inning was scoreless from both sides, but the Roadrunners would explode for seven runs in the bottom of the third. O'Donnell earned two RBIs and junior
Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Nebraska/ Millard West High School) also earned one RBI in the inning.
The Cougars made it on the board in the fifth inning scoring one run to cut the lead to 9-1.
The Roadrunners remained in control allowing just one more run in the sixth while adding three more runs to take a 12-1 lead to start the seventh inning.
MSU Denver held the Cougars to two more runs while scoring two of its own to run away with the 14-3 win.
The Roadrunners and Cougars will wrap up the three game series on Sunday at 12 noon.
