Baseball: MSU Denver Sweeps Series Against Sioux Falls

Roadrunners earn 17-8 win in game three

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team defeated University of Sioux Falls 17-8 on Sunday to sweep the three games series at home. The Roadrunners improved to 4-4 while the Cougars dropped to 0-3. 
 
Senior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) led the Roadrunners with eight total RBIs, posting two home runs in the game and going 4-4. Senior Donny Ortiz Jr. went 4-4 in the game for his ninth straight hit.
 
Senior Beecher Strube (Casper, WY/Kelly Walsh High School) started at pitcher for the Roadrunners in game three of the series. 
 
Both teams came out of the gates swinging. The Cougars were able to put one up on the board in the first to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the inning. 
 
The Roadrunners answered back in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs to take the lead. 
 
After a scoreless second inning, MSU Denver made it back on the board when senior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) knocked one out of the park for a two run homer. 
 
With the bases loaded in the fifth for MSU Denver, the Roadrunners were able to convert one more run to extend the lead to 5-1 heading into the sixth.
 
Sioux Falls has a strong sixth inning scoring two to cut the Roadrunners lead to 5-3. However, the Roadrunners would have a big sixth inning with Maloney hitting his second home run of the day to score three runs for his team, taking a 9-3 lead. 
 
The slug fest continued throughout the rest of the game with the Cougars scoring four more fun with one in the seventh and three in the eighth. 
 
The Roadrunners has a huge seventh scoring six runs to take a 15-4 lead. Redshirt freshman Jeremy Griffith (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley High School) earned his first career home run to score two runs for the Roadrunners. 
 
The Cougars put four more runs up while the Roadrunners posted two more to take the 17-8 lead.
 
MSU Denver will travel to Lubbock Christian on Thursday, February 22 for a four game series.
