Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team fell just short with a score of 66-64 against (15-12, 14-7) Colorado School of Mines (20-7, 14-7 RMAC) on Saturday night. The Roadrunners fell to 15-13 overall and 14-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers improved to 21-7 overall and 15-8 in the conference.
Senior
Cameron Williams (Omaha, Nebraska/Omaha South H.S.) led the game with 29 points.
Shane Fox (Colorado Springs, Colo./Doherty H.S.) and
Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) added eight for the Roadrunners. Senior
Bounama Keita (Saint-Louis, Senegal/Impact Basketball Academy (Fla.)) led the team with seven boards.
The energy was high in the Auraria Event Center to start the game after honoring the five seniors on the team.
The first few minutes the score stayed close between the two sides until the Roadrunners made a solid run. A four point play from Cam Williams would put the Roadrunner up 11 with just over 12 minutes left in the first half. Williams had seven of the first 10 points for the Roadrunners.
The rest of the first half was a battle, the Orediggers were able to steal the lead from the Roadrunners after an 8-0 run with 4:32 remaining in the half. Junior
Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) converted a three-point play to take back the lead for the Roadrunners with just over a minute left on the first half clock.
MSU Denver made it out of the first half on top 38-34. Williams led the game with 16 first half points. The Roadrunners shots 45 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown in the first half.
The Roadrunners started the second half strong outscoring the Orediggers 10-2 through to the first media timeout, taking a 12-point lead.
The Orediggers were able to bring the score within four after a 11-2 run lasting from 7:35-4:26.
The score remained tight in the following minutes. Mines took the lead with just under a minute to go in the game scoring a three to take a 63-62 lead. Following two made free throws the Orediggers took a 65-62 lead.
Williams scored a quick bucket for the Roadrunners to cut the lead to 65-64 with 8 seconds left on the clock.
The Roadrunners got a final chance with six seconds on the clock but were fell just short and the Orediggers took the 66-64 win.
The Roadrunners will compete in the RMAC tournament quarterfinal on Tuesday, February 27.
