Pueblo, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team (5-11, 2-2 RMAC) took game three and four of the double header on Monday to split its four game series against CSU-Pueblo. The Roadrunners defeated the Thunderwolves 8-4 in game one and 4-1 in game two.
Sophomore
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) earned the win in game one, pitching the full seven innings for the Roadrunners.
MSU Denver came out of the gates strong scoring six runs in the first two innings. All six runs came from a series of strung together hits for the Roadrunners. The Thunderwolves were only able to put one run up in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Roadrunners a 6-1 lead.
Each side would score two more runs. The Roadrunners runs came in the top of the fifth, with the team scoring two runs on four hits. The Thunderwolves were only able to put two more runs up in the final inning for an attempt at a comeback. However, the Roadrunners were able to hold the Thunderwolves off to take game one 8-4.
Senior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) led the Roadrunners in game one with three hits and 2 RBIs. McGhee allowed seven hits in game one.
Game two was a close battle between the two sides to begin the game. Junior
Kylee Burnside (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Skyline H.S.) started on the mound for the Roadrunners and held the Thunderwolves scoreless for three innings.
The Roadrunners were the first to score, putting one run up in the top of the third with three hits.
CSU-Pueblo had a solid fourth inning putting one run up to tie the game, however the Roadrunners were able to hold them to the one run forcing three to be left on base.
The go-ahead run would come in the fifth inning when junior Ashley Kim led off the inning hitting a single up the middle followed by freshman
Koryna Wright (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga High School) advancing Kim on a sacrifice bunt. Peters would earn her third RBI of the day to score Kim and allow the Roadrunners to take a 2-1 lead.
MSU Denver held the Thunderwolves to the one run and put up two more runs in the seventh inning, with the first coming from a homerun from Peters. The Roadrunners would score one more to take the 4-1 win in game two.
The Roadrunners will travel to UCCS on Saturday, March 3 to continue RMAC play.
