Chadron, Neb. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver men's basketball team defeated Chadron State on Friday night by a score of 62-47 to move to 14-10 overall and 13-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
MSU Denver was led by senior Cam Williams with 23 points. Junior
Jaryn Taylor (Yucaipa, Calif./Yucaipa High School) was the only other Roadrunner in double-figures scoring adding 10 points. Sophomore
Cain van Heyningen (Amsterdam, Netherlands/Open schoolgemeenschap Bijlmer) grabbed 13 rebounds in the contest.
The Roadrunners came out of the gates looking to score. MSU Denver opened the game on an 14-0 run and held Chadron State scoreless for nearly five minutes. Cam Williams found his rhythm early scoring eight of the first 16 points for MSU Denver. The Roadrunners defense continued to apply relentless pressure as the half progressed. MSU Denver allowed Chadron State to shoot only 15.4 percent after the first 12 minutes. MSU Denver owned the glass in the half, outrebounding Chadron State 24-15 including grabbing 10 offensive rebounds. The Roadrunners led by as many as 22 in the half, but Chadron State would close the gap and MSU Denver would take a 29-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The second half opened with Chadron State scoring the first five points of the half cutting the MSU Denver lead to seven. The Roadrunners and the Eagles would trade baskets over the next several minutes with Chadron State bringing the game to within six with 12:23 remaining in the game. MSU Denver built the lead back to 12 following a Williams three-point basket at the 8:15 mark. Chadron State kept the game close throughout the final minutes of the game. The Roadrunners would convert free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
MSU Denver will travel to Regis on Saturday, February 10 and square-off against the Rangers at 7 p.m.
