Baseball: MSU Denver Splits Doubleheader on the Road

Series to wrap up tomorrow in New Mexico

Las Vegas, New Mexico- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team split its doubleheader against New Mexico Highlands on Saturday.  The Roadrunners fell 10-5 in game one, but bounced back to take game two 4-3.

The Cowboys came out on fire to start game one taking an early 7-0 lead over the Roadrunners in the bottom of the first.

Highlands was the next to strike scoring three more runs in the third to take a 10-0 lead.  The Cowboys would hold the Roadrunners to just one hit through to the fifth inning.   The fifth proved to be the best for MSU Denver.  The Roadrunners put up five hits in the inning to score five and cut the lead to 10-5.

However, that would end up being the last of the scoring from both sides and the Cowboys were able to take game one 10-5.

MSU Denver bounced back in the second game of the day. After the Cowboys put up the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, the Roadrunners answered back in the top of the second to tie the game at one.

Highlands scored two home runs one coming in the second and one coming in the third to take a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth junior Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) led off the inning with a triple to center field to get things going for his team. Senior Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) would follow hitting a double to send Soole home and cut the lead to 3-2.  Junior Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Nebraska/ Millard West High School) was able to score Donaldson for his second RBI of the game and tying the game up at three.

The fifth and sixth stayed even with both teams unable to take the lead.  The difference maker came in the top of the seventh when freshman Jimmy Hollinger reached base on a single for the Roadrunners. Senior Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) then hit a triple to score Hollinger for the go-ahead run.

MSU Denver was able to hold the Cowboys in the bottom of the seventh to take the 4-3 win in game two.

The series will wrap up tomorrow with a single game beginning at 12 noon.
