Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Fort Lewis in both games of its doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners defeated the Skyhawks 5-0 in game one and 8-0 in game two.
Sophomore
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started on the mound in game one of the doubleheader Saturday and would pitch the entire seven inning game. Following a scoreless top of the first inning, the Roadrunners got off to a great start from the plate. MSU Denver nearly made it through its lineup in the bottom of the first, posting two hits and drawing three walks to go up on the Skyhawks 2-0.
The score remained 2-0 through the following three innings. The Skyhawks came close in the top of the fourth, putting up two hits. McGhee was able to make it out of the inning leaving two Skyhawks on base.
The Roadrunners struck again in the bottom of the fifth scoring two more runs.
Jasmine Wessel (Thornton, CO/Horizon High School)l and
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) earned an RBI in the inning.
MSU Denver scored one more run in the sixth and was able to hold the Skyhawks scoreless to seal the deal at 5-0. The Roadrunners outhit the Skyhawks 9-4.
Junior Kylie Burnside started at pitcher in game two of the day to throw a no-hitter through five innings.
The Roadrunners got off to another strong start in game two knocking in four runs to take a 4-0 lead on a series of great offense.
Two more runs came for the Roadrunners in the third and the team was then able to run rule the game scoring the final two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Roadrunners outhit the Skyhawks 10-0 in game two.
The series between two sides will wrap up tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m. at the Regency Athletic Complex.
