Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Fort Lewis in a double header Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners took game on 8-6 and game two 8-4. The team improved to 10-14 overall and 7-5 in conference play. The Skyhawks fell to 7-19 overall and 1-11 in RMAC.
MSU Denver put on a slug fest to begin the first inning batting through the entire lineup to take a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
The score remained 4-0 through to the bottom of the third when the Roadrunner struck again scoring three runs and extending the lead to 7-0.
The first runs for the Skyhawks came from a two run homer would come for the Skyhawks in the top of the fifth, making the score 7-2 in favor of the Roadrunners.
The last run of the game for MSU Denver came in the bottom of the sixth with a single RBI from sophomore
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ).
Fort Lewis fought for the comeback putting together a four run rally in the last inning, but Sohpomore pitcher
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) made it out of it to give the Roadrunners an 8-6 win in game one.
Junior Kylie Burnside started game two on the mound for the Roadrunners to pitch another great game for her team. The Skyhawks started the top of the first with a leadoff double down the left field line and was able to score one run in the inning to take a 1-0 lead.
MSU Denver was held scoreless in the bottom of the inning but forced a quick three out in the top of the second, giving the momentum to explode in the bottom of the inning. Senior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) led off the inning and was able to reach base after being hit by a pitch. Senior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) and
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) then reached base to load the bases for the Roadrunners. A sac-fly from Sansburn would score the tying run. Peters would score the go ahead run for the Roadrunners of a wild pitch. Junior
Celyn Whitt (Broomfield, CO/Legacy High School) then hit a three run bomb to extend the lead to 5-1.
The Roadrunners held the Skyhawks scoreless through to the fifth inning after taking a 6-1 lead, scoring one run in the third. However, Fort Lewis cut the lead to 3-6 after scoring two unearned runs in the top of the fifth.
The Roadrunners would extend the lead again in the bottom of the sixth when junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) hit a double to left field forcing a Skyhawks error to score two more runs for the Roadrunners.
Although Fort Lewis fought for the comeback in the final inning the Roadrunners were able to take game four 8-4.
Whitt led the Roadrunners from the plate, going 4-6 with a home run.
The Roadrunners will take on Colorado Christian on the road next Saturday, March 17 and Sunday, March 18.
