Lakewood, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team fell in its doubleheader to Colorado Christian on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners fell in a close 10-9 battle in game one and 5-2 in game two of the day. The Roadrunners fell to 10-18 overall and 7-9 in the RMAC. The Cougars improved to 23-2 overall and 15-0 in conference.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring two unearned runs on the Roadrunners in the bottom of the first.
Senior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) lead off the second inning with a double to right center. Senior
Sarena Espinoza (Corona, Calif./Corona Centennial H.S.) connected for the second hit of the inning, hitting a double to score Anderson and cut the lead to 2-1.
The Roadrunners would get a quick three outs in the bottom of the third and go on to take the lead in the top of the fourth when sophomore
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) scored a two run homer to take a 4-2 lead.
The game went back and forth the next few innings with the Cougars taking a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth. However, the Roadrunners fought back and took a 7-5 lead following a big sixth inning. Anderson earned two RBIs on a double .
Jasmine Wessel (Thornton, CO/Horizon High School)l scored Anderson for the seventh run.
CCU exploded in the bottom of the sixth to score five runs on six hits taking a 10-7 lead. The Roadrunners nearly made the comeback, scoring two runs in the last inning, but the Cougars were able to hold on to take the 10-9 win.
McGhee posted four RBIs in game one. Espinoza and Anderson both had three hits in the game. Junior
Kylee Burnside (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Skyline H.S.) pitched all six innings for the Roadrunners.
Junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) would leadoff game two with a single and go on to steal second. Junior
Celyn Whitt (Broomfield, CO/Legacy High School) would send Kim home hitting a single to center field, allowing Kim to advance on the throw to take the 1-0 lead.
The Cougars tied the game up at 1 in the bottom of the first on two hits and scored a three run homer in the bottom of the second to hold a 4-1 lead over the Roadrunners.
The score would remain 4-1 in favor of the Cougars with the next run not scored until the bottom of the sixth when the Cougars extended the lead to 5-1.
Senior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) hit one out of the park for MSU Denver in the top of the seventh to try and give the Roadrunners a spark in the final inning, however the Cougars were able to close out the series with the 5-2 win in game four.
The Roadrunners will travel to New Mexico Highlands next weekend for a four game series against the Cowgirls.
