Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated Fort Hays State in a doubleheader on Tuesday evening. The Roadrunners won the first 9-1 in five innings and 6-4 in game two. MSU Denver improved to 12-18 overall and the Tigers fell to 7-21.
Sophomore
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) started on the mound for the Roadrunners in game one to earn a quick three outs to begin the first inning.
Junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) led off the game with a double for the Roadrunners,
Celyn Whitt (Broomfield, CO/Legacy High School) followed drawing a walk and senior
Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) fired a double to center field to score Kim for the first run of the game. Following and error and a ground out RBI from senior
Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge), MSU Denver jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Tigers.
The Tigers drew several walks in the second inning while posting one hit to score one run and cut the lead to 3-1. However, a leadoff homer from sophomore
Alyssa Richter (Thornton, Colo./Mountain Range H.S.) would earn the run back for the Roadrunners to maintaining a 4-1 lead heading into the third.
The score remained 4-1 in favor of the Roadrunners until the bottom of the fourth when sophomore
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) hit a bomb out of the park for a grand slam and to take a 8-1 lead. MSU Denver would go on to score one more run in the inning extending the lead to 9-1 going into the top of the fifth.
MSU Denver held the 9-1 lead through the top of the fifth to end the game in fiving innings.
The Tigers were the first to make it on the board in game two, scoring a solo home run in the top of the second inning.
The Roadrunners would fight back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. With the bases loaded, Sansburn hit a single up the middle to score two runs. Kim would follow hitting a triple to score the final two runs of the inning, taking a 4-1 lead.
Another solo homerun from Sara Breckbill would cut the lead to 4-2, but the Roadrunners scored two to take a 6-2 lead at the bottom of the fourth.
The Tigers were able to put two more runs up on the Roadrunners, but MSU Denver held on for the 6-4 win in game two.
Sansburn went 3-3 in game two and 1-1 in game one for seven RBIs.
The Roadrunners will travel to New Mexico Highlands to play in a four game series Saturday, March 24 and Sunday, March 25.
