Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver baseball team defeated Colorado School of Mines 6-5 in a walk off victory to wrap up the four game series. The Roadrunners are now 10-15 overall and 6-6 in the RMAC. Mines wrapped up the series 15-6 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Â
Beecher Strube (Casper, WY/Kelly Walsh High School) started on the mound for the Roadrunners and retired the first two Oredigger batters to make it out of the first inning scoreless.Â
Â
Senior Donny Ortiz Jr. hit a double for the first hit of the game after senior
Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) drew a walk for the Roadrunners. A single from senior
Hunter Donaldson (Fort Collins, Colo./Fossil Ridge H.S.) would score Maloney for the Roadrunners to take a 1-0 lead. The Orediggers would get out of the first with two Roadrunners left on base.Â
Â
Mines answered in the top of the second with the first runs coming from a two run homer to steal the lead. The Orediggers scored one more in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.Â
Â
MSU Denver tied it up in the bottom of the third. Maloney scored on a wild pitch and senior
Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) would earn a ground out RBI to score Donaldson for the tying run.Â
Â
Mines struck in the sixth to score two runs in the inning. The Roadrunners earned one of the runs to cut the lead to 5-4 after the sixth inning.Â
Â
The Roadrunners tied the game up in the bottom of the eighth when
Draven Adame (Lamar, Colo. /Lamar High School) hit a single to score Maloney and earn his second RBI of the day.Â
Â
MSU Denver looked confident heading into the ninth inning. Junior
Jake Kistaitis (Omaha, Nebraska/ Millard West High School) came in the game as pinch hitter and singled up the middle. Freshmen
Jeremy Griffith (Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley High School) came in to pinch run for Kistaistis, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice, leaving sophomore
Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) on first. Ortiz  hit a "swinging bunt" down the third base line and beat out the throw with a head first dive into first base.
Â
With runners taking leads from first and second, the Oredigger's pitcher attempted a pick-off attempt to shorten up the runner's leads. The throw over to first base sailed over the first basemen's head. Both runners advanced and Soole took a big round as he reached third base. Feeling the pressure, Mines threw the ball home to freeze the runner's where they were. However, the ball bounced in front of the catcher and squeezed past him, rolling to the backstop. Soole hesitated then broke for home. With a headfirst slide Soole beat the throw back to the plate and pandemonium broke loose. The Roadrunner dugout erupted and stormed the field to celebrate, spraying Soole with water.
Â
Donaldson led the Roadrunners going four for four from the plate in the game.
Â
MSU Denver will travel to Adams State next weekend for a four game series.
