Las Vegas, N.M. – The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team defeated New Mexico Highlands in two games of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Roadrunners took the first game 8-7 and then won the second game 7-4.
In the first game, the Roadrunners and the Cowgirls traded runs in a back-and-forth game. It wasn't until the sixth inning when the Roadrunners were able to take the lead for good. Junior
Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) reached on a double. Sophomore
Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) hit a two-run homerun to give the Roadrunners the lead. Sophomore
Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) would enter the game in the sixth inning and record the four-out save. The Roadrunners picked up the win by a score of 8-7.
MSU Denver was able to take control of the second game early. The Roadrunners put up five runs in the top of the second inning and never looked back. The Roadrunners strung together a number of singles and benefited when the umpire reversed a call at third base that would have been the third out of the inning. New Mexico Highlands put up three runs in the bottom of the third inning, but the Roadrunners would not relinquish the lead. Freshman
Destinee Lopez (La Verne, Calif. /Bonita H.S.) came on in relief and pitched four innings with no earned runs and three strikeouts.
The next game for the Roadrunners will be Sunday, March 25 when they will face New Mexico Highlands for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
