Baseball: Roadrunners Drop Game One vs Rangers

MSU Denver Roadrunners fall 5-0 to Regis

Denver - The MSU Denver Roadrunners baseball team (14-16, 10-7 RMAC) lost the opening game of a four-game series against Regis University 5-0 Thursday night at the Regency Athletic Complex.

Regis struck first and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The Roadrunners strung together a couple of hits in the bottom of the second and had a chance to tie the game or take a lead of their own but ultimately left two runners stranded. The Roadrunners left another runner in scoring position stranded in the bottom of the third inning.

Regis added one run via a solo homerun in the top of the fourth inning before hitting a single, stole a base and then hit another single to take a 3-0 lead.

Draven Adame (Lamar, Colo. /Lamar High School) hit a single to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Roadrunners failed to muster offense behind him and left another runner stranded. Regis added another run in the top of the eighth inning to take a 4-0 lead.

The Roadrunners gave themselves a chance to get some runs after loading the bases in the bottom of the eighth inning. Donny Ortiz Jr. led off the inning being hit by a pitch. The Roadrunners singled to left field and then drew another walk but were just unable to push critical runs across the plate. The Rangers added another run in the ninth inning to take a 5-0 lead.

Javi Vega (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park H.S.) started the game and pitched well for the Roadrunners going seven innings and gave up just three earned runs with five strikeouts in 117 pitches.

The Roadrunners and Regis will play a double header on Friday with game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
