Baseball: Roadrunners Take Two Games Against Regis

Win 7-1, 8-4

Denver – The Metropolitan State University of Denver Roadrunners baseball team swept its double header against Regis University on Friday afternoon. The Roadrunners won the first game 7-1 and then took the second game 8-4.

Sophomore Logan Soole (Louisville, Colo./Monarch H.S.) got the start on the mound in game one for the Roadrunners.  He got off to a great start and retired the first three Regis batters he faced in just seven pitches.

He then helped himself out at the plate.

After Donny Ortiz, Jr. (Littleton, CO/Columbine High School) drew a walk, Soole hit a two run home run to deep right center field to give the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Regis got one run back in the top of the second inning with a solo home run to right field. MSU Denver answered back however, scoring two runs with two outs in the bottom of the second inning after stringing together three singles in a row.

Neither team got much going offensively during the middle portion of the game. MSU Denver got a runner into scoring position after juniors' Draven Adame (Lamar, Colo. /Lamar High School) and Aaron Germani (Littleton, Colo./ThunderRidge H.S.) drew walks in the bottom of the sixth inning to place runners on first and second base. Freshman Jimmy Holinger (Parker, CO/Regis Jesuit High School) hit a single to right field to load the bases.

Enter Donny Ortiz, Jr. (Littleton, CO/Columbine High School)

Ortiz Jr. ripped a bases clearing triple to right-center field giving the Roadrunners a 7-1 lead and ended the scoring for game one.

Soole (3-0) shut down the Rangers in the seventh inning rounding out his complete game. He struck out four Regis batters and gave up just six hits over the seven innings on 99 pitches.

Senior Trent Maloney (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) got the start on the mound for MSU Denver in the second game.

Regis hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning to jump out to an early 1-0 lead and then added another two runs in the second inning. Maloney and the Roadrunners got out of a jam when senior Cale O'Donnell (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain H.S.) caught a hard line drive hit at him at third base and doubled off the Regis base runner at second.

O'Donnell then proceeded to hit a two-run home run to right field to bring the Roadrunners within one run and a score of 3-2. Holinger carried over a solid performance at the plate from game one into game two when he drove in a run in the fourth inning to tie up the game at 3-3. Senior Sean Kennedy (Aurora, Colo./Grandview High School) gave MSU Denver its first lead in game two when he singled to right field and put the Roadrunners up 4-3. The Roadrunners tacked on an additional two runs giving them a 6-3 lead after four innings.

Regis got one run right back in the fifth inning after following up a single with a double to the left center gap which allowed the runner to score all the way from fist base and cut the lead to 6-4.  Holinger came through again at the plate and regained the Roadrunners three run lead when he doubled down the left field line and was able to score O'Donnell from first after he drew a two out walk.

Regis threatened in the top of the sixth inning after loading the bases with two outs. O'Donnell went to the mound in relief of Maloney and forced Regis to ground into an inning ending ground ball and kept the Roadrunners ahead by three.

MSU Denver extended its lead to 8-4 in the bottom of the sixth and the Roadrunners defense shut the door on a Regis comeback by getting the Rangers to go three up and three down to complete the two game sweep for the day.

Maloney earned his third win of the year taking him to 3-0 this season and O'Donnell picked up his third save.

The Roadrunners and Rangers will complete their four game series Saturday at noon at the Regency Athletic Complex.
