Softball: Roadrunners Comeback Leads to Split in Double Header

Roadrunners split double header against Mountain Lions

Colorado Springs, Colo.- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split its double header against UCCS on Sunday afternoon.  The Roadrunners fell 8-7 in game one but bounced back to earn a 16-12 win in game two.  The Roadrunners are 6-14 overall and 3-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Mountain Lions improved to 8-12 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
 
In game one of the double header the Mountain Lions put up an early run in the bottom of the first off three hits, but sophomore pitcher Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) made it out of the inning allowing just one run with two left on base for UCCS.
 
Sophomore Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) tied the game up at one in the top of the second hitting one out of the park.
 
UCCS gained the upper hand in the next several innings putting five runs up on the Roadrunners to take a 6-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning.
 
The Roadrunners caught fire in the fifth inning to steal the lead.  Celyn Whitt (Broomfield, CO/Legacy High School) would score Sansburn to begin the rally for the Roadrunners.  Koryna Wright (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga High School) would hit a three run homer to continue the scoring for MSU Denver, bringing the score within one.  Following the homer, senior Kristyn Peters (Lakewood, CO/Dakota Ridge) drew a walk for her team and senior Annika Anderson (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) would go on to hit one out of the park, taking a 7-6 lead for the Roadrunners.
 
MSU Denver held the Mountain Lions scoreless through the bottom of the fifth, however, UCCS took back the lead in the sixth inning scoring two solo home runs to take a 8-7 lead.
 
MSU Denver was unable to make the comeback in the final inning of the game and UCCS took the close 8-7 win.
 
The Mountain Lions started once again started off game two strong taking a 4-0 lead over the Roadrunners in the first inning.
 
The score remained 4-0 in favor of the Mountain Lions until the top of the fourth when the Roadrunners started another rally to steal the lead. Sansburn would begin the scoring hitting a single to score two runners. A triple from Alyssa Ritcher would score another two runs for the Roadrunners and Whitt would wrap up the scoring in the fourth hitting a double to score Ritcher and take a 5-4 lead.
 
MSU Denver struck again in the top of the sixth when Peters hit a bomb out of the park to take a 7-4 lead for her team. However, the Mountain Lions fought back in the bottom of the inning to take back to the lead at 8-7.
 
The top of the seventh was a huge inning for the Roadrunners putting up eight total runs on seven hits. The scoring wrapped up with another Roadrunner home run hit by Espinoza to score the final two runs of the inning.
 
The Mountain Lions put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning but that wouldn't be enough and the Roadrunners took game four 16-12.
 
The Roadrunners will host Fort Lewis next weekend in their 2018 conference home opener.
