Softball: Extra Innings Lead to Double Header Split Against the Orediggers

Roadrunners split double header against Mines

Denver- The Metropolitan State University of Denver softball team split its double header against Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, April 22. The Roadrunners defeated the Orediggers 5-1 in game one and fell 4-3 in extra innings in game two.

Sophomore Darby McGhee (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo High School) pitched all seven innings for MSU Denver, allowing just three hits and one run scored.

The first several innings were offense free from both sides. The Roadrunners filled the bases in the bottom of the second but were unable to make it up on the board.

MSU Denver broke out in the bottom of the third with sophomore Megan Sansburn (/Dakota Ridge H.S. ) hitting a double followed by junior Ashlee Kim (Castle Rock, Colo./Douglas County H.S.) firing a triple to score Sansburn for the first run on the game. Freshman Koryna Wright (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga High School) then hit one out of the park, scoring two runs to take a 3-0 lead for the Roadrunners.

The game remained 3-0 in favor of the Roadrunners with the team extending its lead in the bottom of the fifth. Kim led off the inning drawing a walk and Wright scored Kim on the next play hitting a double to right center. Kim was able to score on a Oredigger throwing error.

The final run came when junior Alyssa Ritcher hit a double to score Wright and put the Roadrunners up 5-0.

The Orediggers were able to put one run up on the Roadrunners in the top of the sixth. However, McGhee and the Roadrunners defense would hold Mines to the solo run and take the 5-1 win in game one.

Kylee Burnside (Idaho Falls, Idaho/Skyline H.S.) got the start on the mound in game two for the Roadrunners to pitch through six innings.

Most of the action didn't start until the final innings of the game with neither team scoring until the seventh inning.

The Orediggers put up three runs in the top of the seventh to take the 3-0 lead.

The Roadrunners made a great comeback in the bottom of the inning. Tes Hass (Loveland, Colo./Loveland H.S.) and Sansburn led the inning off with back to back doubles scoring the first run of the game for their team. The next run would be scored on an Oredigger error. The tying run was scored when Ritcher hit a sacrifice fly to score Kim and send the game into extra innings.

The score remained knotted up at three until the top of the ninth when the Orediggers were able to put on run up on the Roadrunners, taking a 4-3 lead.

MSU Denver made a great effort to earn back the run in the bottom of the inning. Wright would hit a double to reach base with two outs, however, the Roadrunners were unable to convert and the Orediggers took the extra inning win.

The two sides will wrap up its series with a double header to begin at 4 p.m at the Regency Athletic Complex.
